Cancel Culture comes to Carmel

On Father’s Day, my longtime pastor Father Ted Rothrock gave a rousing homily reminding the viewing audience at home and the few of us still in the pews that Holy Communion is the point of church (meaning the Catholic Mass).  He also said we needed to preach this from the rooftops.  After Mass, I asked him in honor of his homily if we could have a Eucharistic Procession along the Monon Trail in downtown Carmel on July 4th.  The City had canceled the usual annual Celebration of Secession from the London Crown parade, so I assumed this was a good way to fill that vacuum.  He intended to take his annual July break to boat on Lake Michigan so passed the duty to his young pastoral associate.  The associate happily agreed to do so. 

I called Father Summerlin to start the planning, and we agreed 10am on July 4th worked best.  I started emailing all this lists and contacts I have in the Carmel Catholic Community.  The next day Father Summerlin asked for me to explore whether the City had any permitting requirements for this type of gathering.  I agreed to do so, though since this was small and was essentially a group of people walking together on a public trail, there probably wouldn’t be any permit requited.  I did not intend to block streets or the trail itself. 

My wife humorously asked whether Jesus asked Pilate for permission to enter Jerusalem on the donkey so long ago.  Since this was not about my views on government (I’m an anarchist in the tradition of Murray Rothbard) but about Jesus, I contacted the police department and parks department to determine whether we needed permission or were required to notify.  Both confirmed my original view. 

In the meantime, Father Ted penned his weekly bulletin article; this one would generate national headlines since he made some pointed remarks about the leaders of the BLM and Antifa movements.  In a church with only about 25% of its normal weekend attendance because of the fear of a virus (which is worse, a virus or Satan?), it is somewhat ironic that this one bulletin article of his finally hit such a nerve.  He has written many similar stemwinders over the years.  He is a breath of fresh air in an increasingly irrelevant and milquetoast Catholic Church.  Some people that didn’t like Father Ted’s article announced they were going to protest our church on Sunday.  Father Summerlin said the Eucharistic Procession was cancelled, in light of this, even though it was just a few parishioners gathering together and taking a walk with Jesus on a public trail. 

Our new administrator appointed by the Bishop invited the protestors onto church property. The church also blocked some people, including a Lutheran pastor, from “counter” protesting on church property. Therefore, so these two groups could get visibility, they both ended up largely protesting on the public easements, including a neighbor’s house across the street. They didn’t ask for permission of the city to do this!

In a side note, there were many more of us who prayed in front of the church most of the day around a beautiful St. Elizabeth Ann Seton statue commissioned by Father Ted than there were protestors. Some people walked out during the Bishop’s comments before Masses this weekend about the suspension; my family did not the night before because his message was so watered down either way that it was hard to get so emotional. We are a large parish and I have been asking Father Ted to get the Bishop here. Sad that this is what it took.

Unfortunately, my takeaway from this: John the Baptist said He must increase, I must decrease. The Church did decrease by not having a Eucharistic Procession, unrelated to anything except Jesus, and protestors increased onto church property to celebrate the scalp of Father Ted’s pastorships (this one and his next assignment, at the largest parish in the diocese). This is a site against militarism, but it does not encourage cowardice either by the Faithful or the Hierarchy. I pray that we listen to John the Baptist.

COVID, American Empire, and Social Engineering

Regarding the necessity of discussing the coronavirus crisis as well as militarism, the following video provides a powerful explanation for the near total capitulation of the Catholic Church to State propaganda in regards to both phenomena. The topic is discussed starting at the ten minute mark. Below the video are transcripts of the most important points from the discussion.

E. Michael Jones speaks on the crisis we face:

—“I think it’s the first time the entire world has been subjected to one form of social engineering. This is unique in all of human history. We’ve had various catastrophes in the past. They’ve always been used as an excuse to impose some form of control.”

—“I think a lot of people feel that the Church’s reaction was weak. I think they feel that way and the problem with the Church is consciousness. The Church still does not understand the term social engineering. They still don’t understand what it means, because if they did they would have a whole different view of their own history in the United States of America.”
 
—“They [the Church] still have a sense that America is a benign force in human history. They believe in, it’s called Americanism, it was even a heresy that was condemned by Pope Leo XIII. They don’t understand that this regime was the enemy of the Church. They don’t understand that, and so they have difficulty coping with this latest crisis, and the classic example of their failure to cope is the Jesuits in America. They have a magazine called America, which is significant, and they had articles, one article was ‘I am a scientist we must close down our churches.’ That is a complete acceptance of the dominant oligarchic narrative, complete acceptance of that, even to the point of shutting down your own worship services.”
 
—“If your life revolves around promoting homosexuality, you’re at war with nature. If you are at war with nature, then you feel very vulnerable. You need the big state to protect you. You don’t feel that the Church can protect you, because you’ve abandoned all of the principles that the Church is based on, including especially the moral law, which is your primary protection in life because it tells you how to act. That’s the problem with the Church. The Church, to make a long story short, has internalized the commands of its oppressors.”
 
—“I think the main problem is Americanism…. I think that America after World War Two became a global power and the Achilles heel of the Catholic Church is always reliance on princes ….”
 
—“We’re now in a position where the Church has to separate itself from the American Empire because the American Empire has become the main enemy, not just of the Church, but of the world. It is the main source of chaos in the world right now.”
 
—“What is the American Empire based upon and it turns out it’s science and because it’s based on science they can operate in contact with ultimate reality and so what you saw here was the Church completely capitulating to that understanding. It’s implicit in that article that I told you about in America. ‘I am a scientist therefore we must close our churches.’ Well if you’re a scientist, I can’t argue with you. You have absolute truth on your side. What am I supposed to say? And so the bishops just throw up their hands and they say, well, we’ll do whatever the scientists tell us, and so you have this ridiculous spectacle of people wearing face masks in church, they’re 6 feet apart. I just went, they just reopened the churches here. It’s enough to make a grown man cry.”

Cardinal Muller (see previous post) has now been joined by Officer Greg Anderson in the ranks of the “bravest men in the world” category.

Greg makes a very important point at the end of the first video. He warns that if the powerful “keep trampling on people’s rights” they may “wake a sleeping giant” and foment civil unrest. The Catholic Bishops should take heed because the Church is probably the only force which might be able to head off such a confrontation. But they must show some backbone and open the Churches now (regardless of secular threats), and step into the fray and declare that governments and authorities must reverse the tyrannical measures and psychological warfare that they have initiated against the populace. Bishops, it’s your move.

John Rao: Pandemic Reaction Is a ‘Horrifying Illustration’ of the ‘Diabolical Disorientation’ Accompanying Ravages of Modernity

Our Socratic forbears taught us through their “Seeds of the Logos” that the reasoning man does not have to be an expert in a given field to be able to make a competent judgment regarding whether he is dealing with leaders whose advice he should heed or reject as fraudulent. Frauds demand absolute faith in their claims, treating the confused doubter with contempt for his invincible ignorance. Such imposters may seriously believe that they are omniscient experts. But when they tell young or otherwise healthy persons that they are in the same condition as the weakest of the elderly or the already ill; when they say that in order to protect itself the vast mass of the population has to abandon its livelihood, the well-being of its country, the cultural life of its civilization, and the tools required for its eternal salvation they must be dismissed for what they actually are: quacks.

The Catholic China Syndrome

You probably have heard of Trump Derangement Syndrome. Well there is another syndrome out there.  It’s called China Derangement Syndrome and it is infecting many good faithful Catholics in a big way. It has reached new extremes since the pandemic began.

This syndrome is easy to find among the more conservative, traditionalist Catholic writers on the internet.

Here are some examples:

Blogger John Zmirak:

“If we can verify that China protected its own citizens from this virus, while sending those likely infected all around the world like human bioweapons … that’s an act of war.
And a much more infamous one than Pearl Harbor, in fact. At least that sneak attack targeted soldiers, not old people in nursing homes.”

Michael Brendan Dougherty at National Review Online:

“Incorporating China into the global order was supposed to bring about an internal reform of the Chinese Communist Party and the liberalization of the Chinese state and society. Instead, China has used its access to international institutions to whitewash its behavior, spread propaganda about the competence of its state, corrupt business, and make something as simple as cellphone towers a national-security threat. The Chinese Communist Party has infected global institutions and markets with its amorality and lawlessness. The cure will be tough and costly, but the disease is worse.”

At Church Militant, where they always refer to the virus as the “Wuhan virus:”

“In either case, this nightmare scenario was brought to you by the Chinese Communist Party — emphasis on communists — either engineering a killer virus to control populations, or creating an environment where people are so deprived that eating raw, sometimes live animals, is a necessity.”

At Lifesite News, from a report on a Chinese dissident:

“During last week’s interview Chen issued a stark warning to leaders throughout the world, saying: ‘If free nations do not face the difficult task of deciding how to eradicate communist authoritarianism – a cancer on humanity – they will become its victims.’”

Patrick Coffin interviews retired Air Force Brigadier General Robert Spalding:

“A war against the United States and the West has been raging under our noses for decades. This war is by definition covert and has many fronts: military, technological, political, and social.
The problem is so few people know it is being waged. Until now. Retired Air Force Brigadier General Robert Spalding, a China expert and former Defense Attache to China in Bejing, China, has written a jaw-dropping book that every American should read. It’s called Stealth War: How China Took Over While America’s Elites Slept.”

Steve Bannon, the brilliant Catholic political strategist, and Steve Mosher, a prominent pro-life Catholic activist, have teamed up with a rogues gallery of anti-China militants to throw down the gauntlet against the CCP at the Committee on the Present Danger: CHINA

The Committee states in its “guiding principles” that:

“The United States is likely to face in the foreseeable future a determined and aggressive superpower adversary, prepared and willing to use force, as well as non-military forms of warfare, to defeat this country decisively. The PRC’s aggressive actions are increasingly putting at risk its own people and environment and that of the rest of the world.”

Bannon himself has said (in March 2016) that

“We’re going to war [with China] in the South China Sea in five to 10 years.”

With all due respect, before these American Catholics devote themselves to “liberating” the Chinese people, they should consider devoting themselves to liberating America and Americans from slavish devotion to violence and militarism, not to mention abortion, divorce, contraception, pornography, same sex “marriage,” man-hating feminism, and now the insane gender ideology. And in doing so perhaps they can stop America from exporting these evils to the rest of the world.

For Catholics, of course, forced abortions in China are a monstrous evil. The China “one child policy” was demonic and the Chinese leaders who imposed it on an unwilling populace will have to answer to God for that. But, God help us, here in America abortion is a “civil right” and people clamor for it and celebrate it. Many Americans, including Catholics, voluntarily collaborate with the abortion regime in numerous ways. What is desperately required here is conversion and repentance. How do the anti-China militants propose to convert Americans from their self-imposed slavery by getting into a war with a nuclear power on the other side of the world?

These folks are doing a great disservice to unborn babies and the pro-life movement in general by associating it with American militarist paranoia and agitating for a potential WWIII with a country which does not threaten us militarily. Communist authoritarianism, although it sure ain’t what it used to be, may be a “cancer on humanity,” but so is a violent, declining and decadent American Empire and it is our cancer and we are responsible for preventing its spread and eliminating it.

The Killing of Osama Bin Laden

“It’s been​ four years since a group of US Navy Seals assassinated Osama bin Laden in a night raid on a high-walled compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The killing was the high point of Obama’s first term, and a major factor in his re-election. The White House still maintains that the mission was an all-American affair, and that the senior generals of Pakistan’s army and Inter-Services Intelligence agency (ISI) were not told of the raid in advance. This is false, as are many other elements of the Obama administration’s account. The White House’s story might have been written by Lewis Carroll: would bin Laden, target of a massive international manhunt, really decide that a resort town forty miles from Islamabad would be the safest place to live and command al-Qaida’s operations? He was hiding in the open. So America said.”
